Melanie Powell, MD/MPH, is currently a third-year Family Medicine resident at Medstar Franklin Square Medical Center (MSFSMC) in Baltimore, MD where she serves as Chief Resident in charge of resident curriculum. Prior to residency, she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology at University of Maryland, College Park and a Master of Public Health at Drexel University School of Public Health with a concentration in health policy and management. It was during graduate school that she first developed an interest in health policy, safety and quality improvement. Her graduate thesis focused on communication strategies by public health organizations to patients with Limited English Proficiency during public health emergencies. Dr. Powell also worked as a health policy intern at the Worcester County Health Department on local legislation to prevent the sale of tobacco to minors. At University of Maryland School of Medicine, she was Vice-President and Policy Chair of the American Medical Association Student Chapter. In this role, she organized educational talks with the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law regarding implementation of the Affordable Care Act and regularly attended MedChi Maryland State Medical Society meetings and the Maryland Legislative Advocacy Day. Dr. Powell is currently working on a transition of care clinic for hospitalized patients at the Family Health Center at MSFSMC, which has decreased readmission rates to the Family Medicine Inpatient Service. She is also developing a curriculum to improve resident reporting of patient safety events.
