Shannon Carpenter, MD is currently a Shoulder & Elbow Orthopaedic Fellow at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. She received her medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. She completed her surgical internship at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, prior to commencing her residency in orthopaedics at the William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI. It was at Vanderbilt that she was first exposed to patient safety initiatives and became interested in being part of the solution.
She continued her education regarding patient safety and quality improvements through classes while at Beaumont, and participating in many resident driven initiatives. During her residency she encountered many instances where patient care could be improved upon by people who were most familiar with the system, the housestaff. She was also nominated as an American Orthopaedic Association Emerging Leader where she attended a week-long conference in Montreal, CA furthering her education in topics at the forefront of healthcare, including safety. It is with these experiences in mind that she decided to join the QIPS Council during fellowship.
She hopes to continue her education in quality and patient safety while in Baltimore, and to use this information to further improve the overall patient experience when she starts her new position in Overland Park, KS.
